Florida State’s Derwin James Has Torn Cartilage In Knee, Not ACL Tear
Florida State star safety Derwin James will undergo surgery Monday to fix torn knee cartilage that he suffered in the team’s win over Charleston Southern, Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher said.

“For him, I’m very happy there’s no structural damage or anything of that regard”, Fisher said at his Monday news conference, via the Tallahassee Democrat. He’ll have surgery later this afternoon, but there is reportedly no structural damage to the knee.
The timetable for James’ return depends on how his surgery goes today, Fisher said.

For the sake of the Seminoles, let’s hope James’ recovery is closer to the two week mark than six weeks. Florida State will have to try to slow him down without their best and most versatile secondary defender as James has been used as both a safety and edge rusher in Charles Kelly’s defense. Fisher knows his team will have their hands full with Louisville, and even watched some of their Friday night game against Syracuse following a coaching staff meeting. The injury took place on a busted coverage in Saturday’s game against Charleston Southern when James had to run down Qua-Vonn Scott. “At the time, I didn’t think much of it, I just thought maybe he had a cramp or something because we couldn’t tell during the game, then they grabbed me afterward and said they weren’t sure, but we’d get an MRI and make sure”. Jackson has become a Heisman contender thanks to 13 touchdowns in his first two games, and looks to put the Cardinals into the College Football Playoff discussion with a win over FSU.
