Florida Zika cases rise to 25 as back-to-school day nears

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 1,825 cases of Zika through August 5, including 322 cases in Florida.

The woman is not pregnant and is expected to make a full recovery, the county said.

Although many areas of the US have the type of mosquito that can become infected with and spread Zika, there have been no reported Zika cases contracted from a mosquito bite in Missouri, according to Clay County health officials.

“We are devastated to report our first case of Zika-associated death and our hearts go out to the family”, Umair Shah, MD and executive director of Harris County Public Health told the AP. Although health officials didn’t require the outdoor entertainment area to close, co-founder Della Heiman said it was a management decision based on concerns about Zika symptoms in some employees.

The area of concentration is between Northwest Fifth Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard to Northwest 38th and Northwest 20th streets. There is now no evidence that past Zika infections will impact future pregnancies. Officials believe transmissions are still limited to a small area that includes the arts district and Midtown. In fact, aside from mosquitos and sex, there are three known ways to catch Zika: mother-to-child, through a blood transfusion, or through laboratory exposure.

Wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Insect repellent carrying DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon or eucalyptus according to label instructions are recommended. The girl died at birth after her mother contracted the Zika virus in Latin America before moving to Texas.

Most infected people have no symptoms.

Stay and sleep in places with air conditioning and screened-in windows.

According to the Mayo Clinic, researchers have been working on vaccines, but for now the best prevention is avoid mosquito bites and mosquito habitats. The sickness is usually mild with symptoms that last from several days to a week.

Serious complications are extremely rare for the patient, but Zika has been linked to abnormal brain development in the baby when it infects a pregnant woman.
