– The CDC said nine pregnant women in the US have contracted lab-confirmed Zika virus disease, and the agency is investigating 10 additional cases.

“Zika virus is only actually transmitted by the infected bite of a mosquito, or sexual contact”.

Brazil said it has confirmed more than 580 cases of microcephaly, and considers a lot of them to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

All the pregnant women who got the virus traveled to an affected region.

The fetus from one of the terminations, which occurred around 20 weeks, was missing portions of it’s brain, and the remaining sections had severe abnormalities.

Several studies are underway in Zika outbreak countries to see if the mosquito-borne virus is the actual case.

A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that the Zika virus can cause a devastating birth defect called microcephaly, a condition that causes a baby to be born with an abnormally small head and brain damage. There are now six possible or probable cases of sexual transmission from a man who had traveled to a Zika zone to a woman.

A Missoula woman has Montana’s first diagnosed case of the Zika virus. It further recommended that pregnant women use condoms throughout their pregnancies if their male partners attend the Olympics. Other cases were reported in IL and Florida.

The new information underscores the importance of following that advice, said CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden. The other part is the northern part of South America with countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. Of those, two either gave birth to healthy children or are continuing their pregnancies.
