A Grand Haven surfer is being credited with saving the life of a 13-year-old girl by pulling her, not breathing, from Lake Michigan off Grand Haven State Park.

“It appears that the girls may have become caught in a rip current”, Jeff Hawke, the Grand Haven Public Safety Director, said in a statement.

The water rescue was reported at about 3:17 p.m. Grand Haven Police say a local surfer pulled the girls from the water.

“I could see her floating there and it looked like a log”, Boeskool told WZZM-TV. They were both taken to the hospital. Another man helped the younger girl to shore. One girl’s condition has stabilized. She was transported to North Ottawa Community Hospital by NOCH Paramedics and was in stable condition on Thursday night.

“I just think everybody within their means should do what they can to help out another person”, he said.

The girls, who are friends, were at the beach by themselves, according to the DPS.
