Floyd Mayweather Jr. loses title won in Manny Pacquiao fight

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been stripped of his welterweight title after the world’s highest-paid athlete allegedly failed to comply with World Boxing Organization (WBO) regulations.

After Mayweather defeated Pacquiao to unify three of the four major welterweight world titles, he made it clear that all the various championships he held meant very little to him and even declared that he would vacate all his titles in order to give younger fighters the chance to win belts.

In terms of the sanctioning fee, Mayweather reportedly made $220 million, which is well over enough to cover the $200,000 price tag.

Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, told ESPN.com that the WBO’s decision was “a complete disgrace”.

Any small chance that Floyd Mayweather would take on Kell Brook or Timothy Bradley in September might have ended on Monday.

Mayfield was one of two names mentioned (the other being Andre Berto) by Mayweather as his potential opponent for September 12 though many doubt either would make the grade.

Mayweather was open to the possibility of a rematch with Pacquiao following their highly-anticipated bout but changed his mind after the Filipino’s camp said their boxer had a hard time fighting because of a shoulder injury.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr.is stripped of his WBO welterweight championship belt, which he won after defeating Manny Pacquiao in May. It’s what the boxing fans need to see!

The other point he raises is that has faced Amir Khan before (in a sparring session) and that he allegedly gave him a beating. This time the WBO saw fit to follow the rules.

Matthyse, who holds a 37-3-0-1NC (34KOs) record and will take on Viktor Postol for the WBC junior welterweight championship, is also being considered.

The WBO gave Mayweather until last Friday to decide if he wanted to pay up.

“The WBO has the utmost respect for Floyd Mayweather Jr. and all that he has accomplished during his storied career”, the WBO wrote in its resolution.

Fighters are not allowed to hold more than one class of world championship titles.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has 14 days to appeal the case. “We have the best attorney in the game, John Hornewer, and we are fully aware of what our rights are”.

Should a rich contract come his way in 2016, Mayweather is expected to seriously consider it.

He said: “Maybe Floyd just didn’t want to pay the sanctioning fee”.
