Steve Gill, managing director of Robin Hood Airport, said: “This is fantastic news for the Sheffield City Region”.

The regional carrier will operate eight of the new routes from Doncaster Sheffield – to Alicante, Amsterdam, Berlin, Jersey, Malaga, Faro, Newquay and Paris Charles de Gaulle.

“It has excellent rail links from Bournemouth and Poole as well as easy access by motorway”.

Other Flybe routes include Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Jersey, Munich and Paris.

Chief executive Saad Hammad said Flybe was now well positioned for profitable growth.

The airline is now finalising its 2016 Summer schedule with all routes coming under review prior to the programme being published on November 10.

“It’s been encouraging to see the introduction of new routes from Southampton and a further expansion of airport services can only be good for businesses and visitors to the area”.

“Regional airports are vital to the economic prosperity of city regions and we welcome Flybe’s massive investment into the Sheffield City Region, wider Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, North Lincolnshire and North Derbyshire regions”.

Passengers are going to be able to fly from Cornwall to Aberdeen and Doncaster.

Tickets are now on sale and the routes will be operational by late March 2016.

Phil Delaney, sales and distribution director for Flybe, added, “We’re excited to confirm our new schedule from Doncaster Sheffield Airport today”.

Bournemouth council leader, Cllr John Beesley, told the Echo: “It’s extremely disappointing news for the airport and the Manchester Airports Group and of course for those in employment and users of the airport”.

“However, we understand that Flybe has chosen to focus its network on its long established hub at Southampton instead”.

Airport bosses claim the new destinations will boost passengers numbers by 500,000-a-year and tick off the wishlists of business and leisure travellers who have been asking for cheap seat-only flights – not package holidays – for years.
