Focus is on Democrats as Colorado holds party caucuses

The GOP is holding caucuses at 102 sites across the state, with 40 delegates to the party’s national convention this summer in Cleveland up for grabs.

Virginia has 95 delegates to the Democratic National Convention. Here is the list of “Super Tuesday” states in alphabetical order: Alabama (south) Alaska (northeast, Republican caucus) Arkansas (south) Colorado (west, Democratic caucus) Georgia (south) MA (northeast) Minnesota (north) Oklahoma (south) Tennessee (south) Texas (south) Vermont (northeast) Virginie (east) Democrats are also voting in American Samoa in the Pacific.

All voters are required to show an acceptable form of photo identification. Those participating in a Democratic caucus must be a registered voter and a Democrat, but voter and party registration will be available on the day of the caucus. The local member of Congress – Barbara Comstock – is a Republican and the local county legislator – Kathie Smith – is a Democrat.

According to the Secretary of State’s office, mid-morning and mid-afternoon are usually slower times at polling locations, while early morning, noon and 5 p.m. are peak times as people typically vote before work, after work or on their lunch breaks.

Precincts sometimes find it hard to elect enough delegates and alternates to meet their allotted number, so voters eager to participate in their party’s decisions can move up the ladder by attending their caucus.

Caucuses begin at 7 p.m., with presidential voting to wrap up an hour later.

Participants will cluster into groups, based on which candidate they support or whether they have no preference.

Virtually every candidate in both parties made at least one stop in Virginia in the run-up to the primary.

Jeb Bush, Martin O’Malley and Rand Paul are just three presidential hopefuls who suspended their campaigns since they filed to compete in the Republican or Democratic caucuses Saturday in Kansas.
