Theisen-Eaton looked to be in dire straits for a medal after a hard Day 1 when she was just off her best performances in all four events.
She moved into third place with a fantastic throw of 47.36 metres in the javelin, the sixth event. Theisen-Eaton was in sixth in the women’s heptathlon after day one and will compete go for an Olympic medal on Saturday.
Theisen cemented her medal position by running a season-best time of 2:09.50 in the 800 meters, which was third overall, to tally 972 points.
The woman of 27 years has totaled 6653 points, behind the Belgian Nafissatou Thiam (6810) and Britain’s Jessica Ennis-Hill (6775). New Zealand settled for fourth place after finishing almost four seconds behind in 4:18.459. The world bronze medallist from Markham, Ont., was slow out of the blocks but turned it on in the final 50 metres to finish first in his heat in a time of 10.04 seconds. She placed seventh in 10.94.

The top 12 divers of 18 advanced to Sunday’s final. She took silver at the 2015 world championships and finished 11th at the 2012 Olympics in London. This is the 20th straight Olympiad that the University of OR has been represented, a streak that dates to the 1932 Games in Los Angeles.
