Speaking after the final whistle, Rooney spoke to the BBC about Rashford’s impressive cameo performance and his Old Trafford team-mate breaking his own long-standing global record.

His captain, though, was delighted, saying: “I think it was 112 days ago he made his debut for Man Utd and he’s now playing on the biggest stage for England so it’s a great story and we’re all pleased for him”.

The Manchester United man was deployed in a midfield role for England’s opening game against Russian Federation and was one of the best players on the pitch.

After Gareth Bale had opened the scoring for Wales, England later sealed three important points thanks to second-half goals from Rashford’s fellow substitutes Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge.

“The Slovakia result puts us in a good position and we will have even more belief now”.

Speaking after the game, he said: “He definitely does”.

“In the second half, the manager made some positive changes and it paid off for us”. We attacked. If we couldn’t go down one side, we came out, we kept the ball and played through midfield. I thought we were fantastic. I’m sitting there thinking he’s doing it and he is the best player on the pitch.

“We kept the ball, kept probing and got the win in the end”.

The United captain has his sights set on sealing top spot in Group B now, having reached the summit following the win over Wales.

“Against Russia, he was probably our best player”, Wilshere added. “We’ll have to finish the job on Monday [against Slovakia]”.
