Footbridge collapses on England motorway, one injured

Gary Coleman from Highways England said: “We are facing a real challenge to lift two HGVs and a motorbike clear of the scene and deal with all of the rubble from the collapsed bridge strewn across both carriageways”.

Twitter users stuck in traffic posted pictures of the scene.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “It is believed a lorry collided with a pedestrian bridge which has collapsed on to the carriageway below”.

The bridge ripped through two trucks that appeared to be passing below when it fell. “30 seconds earlier and we could have been underneath it”. “We were right in the line of fire and we could have been crushed”.

No people are believed to be trapped in the debris, however one person is believed to have suffered injuries, not reported to be life threatening at this time, Kent Police said. “Traffic will be heavier than usual”.

He said his fiancee has been struggling in the back of the vehicle after two-and-a-half hours of waiting with no movement. “We went to the wreckage and saw the lorry and the man underneath”.

Highways England has said that the road closure will last until at least tomorrow. The wounded motorcyclist was taken to Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

Traffic approaching on the M25 anti-clockwise wishing to travel to Dover is advised to continue on the M25 and use junction J2 to join the A2 and M2.

There are queues 4.5 mile queues on the London-bound M20 approaching the scene of the accident between between junction four for Leybourne and junction three for Borough Green.
