The approach is going to be similar to the Hyundai Ioniq lineup, meaning that the Model E would consist of the few different forms of electrification, but with more body style options to boot.

Ford’s Model E strategy has drawn similarities to the Hyundai Ioniq, a lineup of mid-sized EV hatchbacks that will also carry hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric versions.

Ford fought hard to prevent Tesla from using the “Model E” name, and now we know why.

Unveiling of the Model E is likely at a major 2018 auto show, and will go on sale soon after as a 2019 model.

Currently Ford has two hybrids, the Fusion and C-Max; two plug-in hybrids, the C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi; and one EV, the Focus Electric.

Ford trademarked Model E in 2013 as a reference to the company’s heritage models, the Model T and Model A.

Ever since Ford trademarked the Model E moniker back in December 2013 and especially after the quick skirmish with Tesla (who ended up using Model 3 for the affordable sedan) it has been often implied the second largest United States automaker was looking into a completely new electric vehicle.
