For Brazil’s Carnival fans, even Zika can’t stop the party

Forty children aged from six to 14 from Syria, Sudan, Libya and elsewhere will parade among thousands of Brazilian youngsters in a spectacle by the Mangueira samba school, the United Nations refugees body UNHCR said in a statement.

Samba school Estacao Primeira de Mangueira on Wednesday won Rio’s main league 2016 Carnival contest.

“The Rio de Janeiro carnival is something magical”, said Mr Fernandes, who practised twice a week for 10 months to be ready. Over the years, traditions in Brazil acquired elements from African and Amerindian cultures, making Rio’s carnival celebrations among the most distinctive in the world.

The samba schools are key to Brazil’s carnival celebrations, with each school representing a particular neighbourhood, usually a working-class favela.
