For Milwaukee Residents, Another Night of Protest Ensues

Shots rang out during unrest after a police shooting that killed a man Saturday. “I saw in many instances people preaching on street corners, counseling small groups of individuals”.

The unrest did not subside until after midnight, after Mayor Tom Barrett and other city leaders called a press conference to plead for calm.

The curfew earlier applied to teenagers up to and including 16-year-olds.

He says they’ll be prepared to assist Milwaukee city and county law enforcement agencies this evening if needed to help keep the peace.

Clarke has made headlines for attacking the Black Lives Matter movement and criticizing President Barack Obama for supposedly stoking anti-police sentiment in African-American communities.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard in such situations. The city’s usual summer curfew for teenagers younger than 17 has been 11 p.m.

Last year, a total of 990 people were fatally shot by police in the USA, according to the Post.

NPR reports that Sylville Smith ran from police during a traffic stop, and police say he was carrying a gun.

Normally, the agency doesn’t release the videos of a shooting or death until the investigation is complete and a district attorney has decided whether to issue charges.

The Milwaukee officer who shot Smith was now staying with relatives out of town for fear of his safety, Flynn said.

Seven police officers were injured in a second night of violence Sunday that stretched into the early hours of Monday.

The Police Department tweeted that one officer was taken to a hospital after he was struck by a brick thrown through his squad vehicle window.

Because the audio was delayed, he said, it was not clear when the officer fired his weapon.

“My brother was no felon”, said one of them, Kimberly Neal, 24, as she wept. He did not say what would happen to teens who are found outside in Milwaukee past the curfew deadline.

Smith’s death comes amid nationwide tensions over police use of force – which has spurred protests but also deadly violence against officers. Police said he and another man were pulled over about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Smith was hit in the chest and arm, Flynn said.

Protesters threw bricks, rocks and bottles at police and squad cars, injuring one officer. The officer stopped Smith’s vehicle because he noticed that Smith was acting suspiciously. It did not take long before the protests turned very violent.

Such inequality has afflicted many USA cities over the past three decades, sometimes stoking unrest when police use deadly force.

The weekend’s demonstrations and rioting were prompted by the police killing of a 23-year-old black man, identified by police as Sylville Smith, on Saturday. Police said Smith was fleeing from authorities with a stolen handgun and that bodycam footage showed he was holding the gun when he was shot. Five officers were killed by a black sniper in Dallas back in July during the peaceful protest of two police killings.

Flynn declined to identify the officer who shot Smith but said he is black. One person was injured by gunfire.

But there was no repeat of the widespread destruction of property. Police moved in to try to disperse the crowd.
