The announcement did not say exactly how much The Force Awakens had made, but it is still doing well at the USA box office.

The $33 million haul on Saturday gave Disney its biggest opening day ever in China. Internationally, it earned $3.4-M from 21 territories for a foreign take of $8.2-M and global box office take of $82.1-M.

This weekend, Force Awakens will also sail past the $1.669 billion grossed worldwide by Jurassic World to become the No. 3 movie of all time behind Avatar ($2.78 billion) and Titanic ($2.19 billion), not accounting for inflation. Despite the challenges, the film exceeded projections, which had it opening to around 20 million. It earned around $25 million in the first weekend of wide release, and so far has garnered about $38 million after some limited showings in NY and Los Angeles that occurred in December. The opening easily beat out industry predictions, which figured it for the mid-twenties. “Daddy’s Home”, $15 million ($10.2 million international). 4. Audiences were drawn to this film by the reviews (80% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the heavy awards buzz for DiCaprio, who is expected to score an Oscar nod for his work as Hugh Glass. The hugely complicated shoot was a production nightmare, with the film’s budget ballooning from 90 million to 135 million and the cast and crew being forced to decamp from Canada to Argentina search of snow.

According to Box Office Mojo, Avatar still stands ahead of Star Wars. The board game features Luke Skywalker, Finn, Kylo Ren, and Darth Vader – yet, Darth Vader doesn’t physically appear in the film.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s comedy Sisters rounded out the Top 5 with $7.2-M for a domestic take of $73.9-M. The Revenant, $US38 million ($US20.2 million) 3.

The Revenant stars Tom Hardy alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as a frontiersman named Hugh Glass on a fur trading expedition in the 1800s trying to survive after being mauled by a bear.
