Force Awakens Just Obliterated Box Office Records
“The Force Awakens” started its United States box office run in record-setting fashion with $57 million in Thursday night previews – 31% above the $43.5 million in previews for the final Harry Potter film.

The Walt Disney Co. on Saturday said the film made an estimated $120.5 million from Thursday night previews and opening day Friday. It also netted the records for the biggest single day opening, the fastest movie to gross $1 million – taking only one day to achieve that feat – and helped set a new record for the most money ever taken in U.S. movie theaters in a single weekend.
China, with roughly 30,000 screens – the USA has about 40,000 – delivered almost $100 million of the worldwide haul that “Jurassic World” managed in its opening weekend overseas this summer.
In Britain, Germany, Australia, Russia and many other countries, it scored the biggest opening weekend as well.
Forty-seven percent of Thursday’s domestic ticket sales came from 3D tickets, Disney said.
“We are obviously very encouraged by the record-breaking pre-sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, Dave Hollis, the executive vice president of distribution at Disney, said in a statement.
The force will awaken in China, the world’s second-largest movie market, on January 9.
In a turn of events that will shock precisely nobody, a fantasy adventure space film called Star Wars: The Force Awakens is making insane amounts of money.
“The Force Awakens” was expected to gross $180 million to $220 million through Sunday in its domestic opening weekend.
The Force Awakens has taken an estimated $517m (£347m) globally in three days.
The latest film, which some analysts expect to gross more than $2 billion, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. Its ability to profitably exploit “Star Wars” across all its divisions was the justification for Disney’s $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm LLC in 2012.

As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record – Avatar ($2.78 billion) and Titanic ($2.18 billion). Cath Star Wars Episode VII in theaters now.
