‘Force Awakens’ on path for record $200M-plus weekend
The highly-anticipated “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” brought home the box office record yesterday night, December 17, obliterating former box office record-holder “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” in 2011.

The opening weekend record is now held by “Jurassic World”, which premiered earlier this year to $208.8 million at the box office.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters yesterday as the 7th official film in the series, and it’s likely to keep theaters jam-packed for weeks until the hype from the movie dies down a little bit.
“We are obviously very encouraged by the record-breaking pre-sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, Dave Hollis, the executive vice president of distribution at Disney, said in a statement.
Internationally, the film took in $14.1 million in sales on its Wednesday debut overseas. It also has a shot of setting the u-s record for biggest opening weekend ever.
Disney bought George Lucas’ Lucasfilm for $US4 billion ($5.5 billion) in 2012.
“The potential for The Force Awakens to ultimately break into the $2bn club worldwide is certainly in the realm of possibility”, he said.
The box office has awakened.
Harrison Ford has a message for anyone trying to spoil the new Star Wars film.
The film is playing at a total of 4,134 North American locations.
“This is essentially the accumulation of nerdiness and years of waiting and waiting and waiting and finally it’s coming out”, said Cam Olivieri, who went to see the film at a Pearland theater on Thursday.
