The new “Star Wars” film is the seventh installment in the series created by George Lucas in 1977. “And there are plenty of tickets available for them all”. The Force Awakens’s opening weekend is only the first test to see whether the film will satisfy Disney investors and film buffs alike.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens made $US57 million on Thursday night, beating the previous record of $43.5m held by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011.

“It might join the $2 billion club worldwide, and maybe, just maybe, be the highest grossing film of all-time”. “The Force Awakens” is simultaneously opening around the world just about everywhere but China, where it debuts in January.

Star Wars mania is also smashing records overseas, where The Force Awakens began to rollout in 12 markets on December 16.

The fact that the film opened in December is another major factor that makes it quite impressive that Star Wars: The Force Awakens logged the biggest opening ever.

“The Force Awakens” opens against Universal’s Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” and 20th Century Fox’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”, both of which are expected to gross $14 million to $17 million this weekend.

Of that $57-million, almost half came from 3-D screenings, and roughly 10-percent came from IMAX screenings.

A lot is riding on the film for Disney, which paid $4.06 billion for Lucasfilm in 2012.
