‘Force Awakens’ smashes opening-day mark
That total does not include receipts from China, the world’s second-largest movie market, and China’s absence is a major reason why global box office receipts for “The Force Awakens” failed to top those of “Jurassic World”.

The opening day of Star Wars: The Force Awakens did not disappoint, obliterating the previous record of $91.1 million set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011.
The movie’s impressive opening also shattered the opening weekend record for movies released in December, when audiences are more focused on holiday shopping and travel.
The trend, if it holds, would also mark the first time a movie has surpassed $100 million so soon, Walt Disney Co. said Friday in an e-mailed statement, topping the mark held by a “Harry Potter” picture.
“There a lot of entry points into the series”, observes Alyssa Rosenberg, an obsessive “Star Wars” fan who blogs about pop culture for The Washington Post.
But The Force awakens introduces new characters and fresh faces as Disney prepares for a string of new Star Wars films and spin-offs.
“It might join the $2 billion club worldwide, and maybe, just maybe, be the highest grossing film of all-time”.
The movie has already smashed several film industry records and won praise from critics and moviegoers.
The film has also set a new opening night box office record in the United States and Canada. (Jurassic World hit $100 million in two days.) Opening in 4,134 theaters, a record number for a December opening, The Force Awakens posted a per-theater average of $57,568, a record for a wide-release opening.
Surprisingly this did not help Disney’s share price in the USA, with its shares down 4 per cent on Friday, as the overall market suffered declines. The record holder for the biggest opening during the month is “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, which took in $85 million in domestic receipts in 2012.

“Sisters”, starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, pulled in $5 million on Friday from 2,962 locations, while “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” netted $4 million in 3,653 locations.
