The figure shatters the previous record, which was set by Jurassic World earlier this year when it premiered to US$208.8 million. After all, there were long lines for “Star Wars” at 5:15 a.m. outside of the Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

Bayern next faces last season’s runner-up Juventus in the last 16, with the first leg on February 23. In the meantime there is sure to be plenty of speculation over what his next move will be.

The plan is for a new trilogy, but Daniels wouldn’t say if he’ll be in the next two instalments. Security will be tight, with several streets blocked to traffic and extra police on patrol.

That includes a chart-topping $57 million from fans who rushed out to see the first showings on Thursday night.

The movie’s massive debut also defies the industry’s conventional wisdom that a winter film could never compete with the opening-weekend box office of a summer smash.

Analysts predict that the seventh instalment of the iconic space saga, which cost Disney an estimated $200 million to produce, could score the biggest opening weekend ever and could even become the biggest film of all time.

Overall, “The Force Awakens” has grossed some $130 million dollars worldwide since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden. No film had over $1 million in advance IMAX sales, but “The Force Awakens” had $6.5 million – one month later, advances sales totaled $50 million – another record.

“The Force Awakens” picks up the intergalactic story of good versus evil 30 years on from “The Return of the Jedi”, the finale of the original trilogy.

The new “Star Wars” film is the first installment in a decade in the series created by George Lucas in 1977.

The latest film in the “Star Wars” franchise stars veterans Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, along with newcomers Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis and Domhnall Gleeson.
