The software update, available through Ford’s website, will enable Apple’s Siri Eyes-Free feature in over five million vehicles equipped with its SYNC infotainment system. Eyes Free support actually went live two months ago with the launch of version 3.8 of the second-generation SYNC software, but Ford has apparently waited until now to make the rollout official as it has worked to apply the update to new cars coming from the factory and make it available to owners of existing vehicles.
Many automakers are making efforts to roll out Apple’s CarPlay functionality, but Ford is going for the older Siri Eyes Free Feature. Sync technology is Ford’s proprietary effort that already debuted on more than 12 million vehicles globally, and is known as “MyFord Touch” in North America.

The vehicle also needs to be equipped with the sync entertainment and communications system. Although Ford is one of many auto makers that intends to support CarPlay, the company has said that it doesn’t want to give up its own Sync in-dash system, and is looking at ways to integrate the two offerings. He continued that the new Siri feature would provide another voice-activated tool which will add convenience for the driver, as well as helping them “keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel”. Owners are advised to visit owner.ford.com or book an appointment with their local dealership to get the update.
