Foreign tourists attacked in western Afghan’s Herat

Speaking to Al Jazeera, he said: “A group of Taliban fighters conducted the attack on the tourists, injuring at least six”.

“The convoy was ambushed by the Taliban in Chesht-e-Sharif district”.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack and the nationalities of the tourists aren’t yet known.

The official said the buses were travelling from Bamyan to Herat province, 640 km west of Kabul.

Afghan officials told the BBC a group of a dozen travellers were escorted by Afghan army personnel on their way to Herat city when they were ambushed.

Western embassies typically warn their citizens against all travel in Afghanistan, citing threats of attack and kidnapping.

The Taliban insurgents and militants belonging to the other militant groups are frequently using magnetic bombs to target the government and security personnel.

On Monday, a hotel popular with foreigners in Kabul was attacked by the Taliban. The rising violence has resulted in large Afghan civilian casualties. The militants killed two men before releasing the rest, reportedly in return for ransom payments.
