Both communities were in the path of flames from an array of wildfires dubbed the Okanogan Complex, which has doubled in size since Thursday to scorch some 161,000 acres of brush and dry timber about 115 miles (185 km) northeast of Seattle. We do not have the resources. Three of them, including two of the largest, were burning in Okanogan County.
“We are one degree of separation away from knowing somebody and I have an individual that works for me directly, that is her hometown”, said Welch. “We can not get out and put boots on the ground for all these fires”.
Almost 29,000 firefighters are battling 100 large blazes across the West. Three others sustained injuries but their conditions are not known.
Final details were still being worked out, but the contingent from Australia and New Zealand was expected to arrive in Boise, Idaho, on Sunday.
The accident happened near the town of Twisp, Washington, according to the National Forest Service.
