Later Monday, Red Deer RCMP said officers were called to a serious crash on the QEII Highway near the Blindman River hill, north of Red Deer at about 2:20 p.m.
Police say the semi was traveling towards the two vehicles when it lost control and struck the rear of one of the vehicles and the driver of the other vehicle, who was not in his vehicle at the time.
Bhullar was trying to help the driver whose vehicle had rolled, when a semi truck hit a auto parked on the side of the highway and careened into Bhullar as he walked between his auto and the rollover.
RCMP would only identify the driver as a 35-year-old male from Calgary, his name was not released by police. He was seriously injured and rushed to hospital by ambulance but died of the injuries he sustained.
CALGARY, Canada-Manmeet Singh Bhullar, a Sikh Canadian politician and Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta who represented the constituency of Calgary-Greenway as a Progressive Conservative passed away today after a tragic accident.
Bhullar had been minister of human services in the government of former premier Alison Redford, held the infrastructure portfolio under Prentice, and was most recently serving as the Tory party’s critic on finance, the Treasury Board and infrastructure.
“It is the basic right of each and every one to express grief publicly or to protect privacy in a period of tremendous stress”, Bhullar said in April 2014 when the changes were made.
Bhullar, a former Cabinet minister, was on his way back to Edmonton after speaking at the University of Calgary earlier in the day.
“His passion and dedication will live on in our hearts and we will greatly miss him”.
Bhullar was born in Calgary and was first elected at the age of 28.
“The light in our lives went dark today”, they said. Just as his faith, wife, family, friends and community gave him strength, it will give us strength now.
The family confirming in a statement Monday night, saying “Manmeet left us while he was doing what he loved more than anything, helping someone else”.
Premier Rachel Notley called Bhullar’s death a “terrible tragedy” and said “all Albertans should be proud of his significant contributions to public life”, calling him a passionate advocate for the province.
