Former Blackburn Rovers coach Eric Black named interim boss at Rotherham United

Rotherham United are ready to wait until the worldwide break before deciding on their next manager after the shock departure of Steve Evans.

The Scot left the Millers yesterday morning following a meeting with chairman Tony Stewart.

The club have put Eric Black in temporary charge until a full time successor to Evans is found.

The club have insisted they will not comment any further until a successor is found, with former Sheffield Wednesday manager Stuart Gray, former Leeds boss Neil Redfearn and ex-Reading manager Brian McDermott the early frontrunners.

The club said both parties “wished to head in a different direction” and the pair depart New York Stadium after three and a half years in the job.

“We had our normal meeting as we have had on a daily basis for three-and-a-half years”.

“Replacing Steve Evans and Paul Raynor will indeed be a strenuous task for the board”.

Evans moved to Rotherham from Crawley Town – having guided the latter into the Football League with back-to-back promotions – and oversaw an impressive period of success with the Yorkshire club as well.

The 52-year-old Evans leaves with Rotherham 20th in the Championship, although they have won their last two games.

Evans’s stint in charge brought 71 wins and 45 draws from 172 games. “Rotherham United Football Club will always welcome Steve and Paul whether as an opposition management team or as supporters of our fantastic football club”.

“I’ve been at the club for over three years and we’ve had a lot of meetings, but the last few times we met, especially on Monday, there were hurdles we just couldn’t get over”, he told Sky Sports News.
