Former Clemson coach Danny Ford weighs in on College Football Playoff
Coach Bob Stoops shook up his staff and guided the Sooners within two victories of their first national title since 2000. Clemson keeps getting disrespected – hand raised – and it keeps on winning.

Adam Griffith added three more points on a 47-yard field goal with less than two minutes to play in the opening half. That turned a 16-10 Clemson lead into a one-point OU advantage at 17-16. Texas cranked up the intensity, and the OU attack shut down. Clemson has lost the last 12 meetings and the games haven’t been close. Part of the reason is the threat that the Clemson offense poses to Alabama. That’s no disrespecting the Tigers in any way since it was their defense that stopped the Oklahoma offense in the first place.
The matchup for the College Football National Championship is now set. That was a head-strong, veteran Spartan team that looked like it might as well have been Eastern Michigan.
But the biggest difference was the day the games were played. Here are the five key storylines everyone will be talking about over the next several days. That game featured the most successful active college football coach, Alabama’s Nick Saban, and Michigan State’s coach Mark Dantonio – who once served as an assistant coach to Saban at Michigan State. He insisted he was healthy before the Orange Bowl and proved it. He’ll need to be 100 percent if the Tigers want to contain the Heisman Trophy victor.
In the middle of last season, Clemson posted a delightful video of Swinney dancing to to “Happy” by Pharrell.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 26 of 41 passes for 311 yards and one touchdown for the fourth-ranked Sooners (11-2). They won with the better defense.
The Sooners never were able to establish a running game, and by the end of the game they were without the two guys they had counted on all season to carry the ground game.
Best record ever? That’s within Clemson’s reach. Saban eventually started talking about Clemson.
Clemson may not have had Shaq Lawson for most of its College Football Playoff semifinal, but the star defensive end said he should be back in time for the championship. That doesn’t happen. 5.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Wayne Gallman, rushed for 295 yards on 50 combined carries.
“I think they’re fantastic”, said Phil Prince, a former Clemson University president and member of the Tigers’ unbeaten and untied 1948 team who joined the crowd to welcome the Tigers home.

Clemson is now 14-0 on the season and 7-7 against the spread following Thursday’s win, while Alabama is 13-1 overall and 8-6 against the spread. Clemson has to crank up at least 200, and it’s going to have to be truly special to do that. And even with what the Seminoles and Tigers have done in recent years, the ACC still believes it doesn’t get the level of respect that’s afforded to some of the other leagues namely the Southeastern Conference, which just happens to be providing Clemson’s final obstacle this season in Alabama. However, the first-thought, knee-jerk reaction? That’s going to change in a big way very soon.
