Former Detroit Lions RB Mel Farr passes away

Reports say that Farr died suddenly in his home. He wore a cape on TV adds and was known as Mel Farr Superstar. The Lions drafted him with the 7th overall pick in the 1967 NFL draft. He was a two-time Pro Bowler, the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1967 and Detroit’s leading rusher in three different seasons.

Mel Farr, the Detroit Lions’ running back who rushed for over 3,000 yards in seven NFL seasons, has died.

Farr and Barney sang on Marvin Gayes hit, “Whats Going On. His younger brother, Miller, and sons Mel Jr. and Mike also played in the NFL. Hall of Famer Charlie Sanders died on July 2 at age 68.

Following his playing career, Farr opened multiple auto dealerships in the Metro Detroit area, lending his star power to the commercials. MLive.com reported Monday evening that Farr was at Sanders’ funeral last month.
