The mysterious yet promising new smartphone from Nextbit is scheduled to make an appearance on September 1, so you’d better mark the date in your calendar. He hinted that the price of the new smartphone would be between $300 and $400, residing in the premium tier, and promised to deliver something different. An interesting prospect given the amount of Android devices that tack on more software features over time, but tend to take a drastic hit in performance (we’re looking at you Samsung).

“We’re supercharging it”, said Moss in regards to Nextbit’s implementation of Android. Mike Chan, chief technology officer and fellow Android veteran, said the Nextbit phone would rely heavily on cloud storage to let users access as much of their content as they like, even when it is not stored locally on the phone. The company plans to call upon its roots as a cloud software developer to create a framework that allows users to store as many apps, photos, songs and videos as they want.

Moss, Nextbit’s CEO, told Cnet the phone will be “friggin’ awesome”.

The company claims that it will work around the Android OS to achieve those lofty aims, ensuring that their smartphone keeps improving. If the name sounds familiar to you, that’s because Nextbit is a startup that has Google Ventures as a backer.

In an interview with CNET, Nextbit said that the device “will perform better over time and function at a higher level” because of the company’s continued optimization of the Android operating system.
