Former head of National Football League officials Mike Pereira says refs mishandled Newton protocol

After blasting Carolina quarterback Cam Newton in the helmet four times last Thursday, the National Football League blasted back at the Denver Broncos today, hitting them where it hurts professional athletes most.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – A person with knowledge of the punishment tells The Associated Press that two Broncos defenders have been fined a total of $42,540 – but not suspended – for helmet-to-helmet hits on Cam Newton.

Stewart’s fourth quarter hit, which did draw a flag from the umpiring crew, was enough to see him hit with a fine of $18.231 (£13,810) while Marshall was fined $24,309 (£18,420) for a hit that went unpunished during the game. Both players have stated the plan to appeal the fine, with Marshall stating it is just too much money not to.

But, no matter which quarterback you face, if you contact the head multiple times, more often than not you’ll get flagged on the field, and fined by the NFL.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said he’s not anxious about the long-term effects of repeated hits to his head. “I worry about winning”.

The team has been accused of playing dirty, but head coach Gary Kubiak disagrees.

“I disagree”, Kubiak said on Monday. It was a defensive game to say the least, and a close one. Third-string quarterback Bryce Petty (right shoulder) is out, and cornerback Darryl Roberts (foot) is listed as doubtful.

And while several of Newton’s teammates called out the Broncos and the league for the host of hits he took last Thursday, you won’t hear any complaints from Cam. “It’s kind of like Shaquille O’Neal”. Now if they can just figure out a way to prevent those pesky helmet to helmet hits that cause those concussions, maybe we can finally get somewhere on the issue. I’ve seen hits in the past where guys stumbled, and I’ve seen hits where it affects their play afterward … You have no idea what plays they can run with a quarterback that can do the things he can do. “At the end of the day, he had the ball like he was running”. If he’s in a passing posture, whether he’s inside the pocket/outside the pocket, he’s still going to get passer protection – head, neck, crown to the body – those types of protection. Although Stewart’s hit left Newton motionless on the ground, Newton wasn’t checked for a concussion until after the game.

“But if it’s a 10-yard penalty or a foul like grounding, the fouls offset”.
