Kreiss described Peres’s condition as critical but stable.
Concern mounted over the condition of 93-year-old Peres, widely respected as an elder statesman both in Israel and overseas, after his stroke on Tuesday that included bleeding.
By then, he had been in Israeli politics for more than half a century, holding virtually every position in Israel’s Cabinet, from minister of defense to prime minister, a position he held twice.
In a career spanning almost seven decades, Peres, 93, served in a dozen cabinets and twice as a Labour Party prime minister, even though he never won a general election outright in five tries from 1977 to 1996.
“Shimon, we love you, and the entire nation hopes for your recovery”, Netanyahu wrote on Twitter in Hebrew.
“After 24 hours of intensive care, I can say that his condition is still severe but he is stable, and there is a certain improvement”, Prof.
Further details about Peres’ hospitalization weren’t immediately available.
Peres had complained of chest pains and had difficulty breathing.
Opposition leader Isaac Herzog also wished the elder statesman a rapid recovery. My father is one of a kind, I am praying for him and ask all those who pray to continue to pray with us.
“The 9th President of the State of Israel, Shimon Peres, suffered a major stroke today”, said Reiss.
He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his role in negotiating the Oslo peace accords.
Peres is 93 years old and despite suffering a mild heart attack in January, he has been active in public life since then with a grueling schedule.
Peres is at Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan just outside of Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. “We all know that Israel is a nuclear power and it is only thanks to Peres”, Rubinger noted. “And I pray with all my heart, together with my family, that things will improve from this point on”.
He joined the Zionist struggle in the 1940s and while hitchhiking met David Ben-Gurion, who would become Israel’s first prime minister.
“I’m optimistic. I’m a great believer in my father”.
Born Shimon Perski in 1923 in a Polish town now known as Valozhyn in Belarus, Peres immigrated to Palestine in 1934 with his family.
He served as Israel’s ninth president between 2007 and 2014, a mostly ceremonial post that turned him to be one of the country’s most popular presidents.

In recent years, he dedicated much of his time to promoting peace between Israel, the Palestinians and the Arab world through his Peres Centre for Peace.
