Former M&S chief to head Britain’s ‘stay in EU’ campaign

At a launch event for the Britain Stronger In Europe campaign, former Association of Chief Police Officers president Sir Hugh Orde warned that “villains” would come to the United Kingdom to escape justice if the country pulled out of EU-wide agreements on extradition and sharing evidence.

Lord Rose – who will be joined in the campaign by Apprentice star Karren Brady – said: “I believe that Britain is stronger in Europe”.

Upon beginning his term as Prime Minister, Cameron set to work negotiating the UK’s membership, but worries about how a referendum vote might end have begun to surface.

It says staying in the European Union is the “positive, patriotic” decision, while leaving would limit free trade and diminish British influence in the world.

Alex Johnstone, who will become the sole Tory to have been at Holyrood since 1999 if re-elected next May, told The Courier the current set-up from Brussels “no longer serves Britain’s interests”. And the migrant crisis – which has seen European countries struggle to deal with hundreds of thousands of new arrivals from the Middle East and Africa – has emboldened those in Britain who want it to strengthen its borders.

While publicly maintaining that the Government is “entirely focused on a successful renegotiation”, figures close to the Prime Minister are understood to have held discussions with Andrew Cooper, the former Downing Street aide who is now a leading figure in the “in” campaign.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, previously considered a Eurosceptic, has stated that he would campaign for Britain to remain within the EU.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage was swift with his riposte, pointing out a few of the downsides to the European system, compared with ancient British rights.

Lord Rose spent seven years at M&S as chief executive and chairman and is expected to make the business case for Britain remaining in the EU.

But Mr Jenkin hit back at Lord Rose’s claims saying: “A vote to remain in is the leap in the dark, nobody knows how the European Union will develop over the next five to 10 years”.

This calculation is highly contentious – not least because the CBI picked five studies which best made the pro-EU case. There are concerns among senior members of the governing party that many hedge fund managers in the country may throw considerable financial resources behind the “out campaign”, CNBC reported.

UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron is anticipated to initiate the renegotiate process of Britain’s relationship with the bloc soon. “What unites us is a commitment to make Britain stronger”, Rose said, underlining the desire of both sides to show they have appeal beyond the established politics.
