Former Michigan State star Appling arrested in Detroit
For the third time since May, former Michigan State University basketball player Keith Appling has been arrested and once again a gun is involved, police say.

According to The Detroit News, officers detected the smell of marijuana coming from Appling’s vehicle. When the officer reached in the Challenger to retrieve it, Appling allegedly closed the window and drove away. Police searched and found a backpack with a loaded Beretta handgun, Nike tennis shoes and a bond order from the city of Dearborn – in which Appling is named as defendant. The officer was able to free himself before the vehicle left the scene, and he was not hurt or dragged, according to the statement. The officers pursued and stopped the vehicle at Orleans and East.
Further the Detroit News reported officers were unable to find marijuana in the vehicle but did find the weapon, concealed in a bag, in the road upon backtracking Appling’s attempted evasion route. According to Fox2News, Appling posses a medical marijuana card.
Hall says Appling was stopped Sunday night and he disputes some of the facts coming from police. The suspected marijuana was not found.
Appling was arrested in the parking the Pantheion Club in Dearborn on May 1 for allegedly pulling out a gun from the trunk of a auto, and then again on June 18 in Detroit, when police said he placed a gun under the passenger seat during a traffic stop.
Appling has also previously been in trouble for drugs and weapons charges that stemmed from a situation outside a strip club in Dearborn in May.
Appling’s arrest comes about six weeks after he spoke to WWJ’s Bonnell at the Horatio Williams Foundation in Detroit, where he was mentoring neighborhood kids. State Fair and took Mr. Appling into custody without further incident, Woody said.
Appling is a Detroit native who played basketball for Pershing High School and then MSU before spending the a year ago with the Orlando Magic’s Developmental League team.

Appling made his National Basketball Association debut this past season, playing in five games for the Orlando Magic in his second professional season.
