Former NFL star Tim Tebow joins New York Mets

Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy victor and first round draft pick for the Denver Broncos, played three largely disappointing seasons in the National Football League, first with the Broncos and then with the New York Jets.

The contract includes a $100,000 signing bonus.

Tim Tebow took his first big swings at a baseball career on August 30, showing off a powerful bat and other developing skills during a workout in front of dozens of major league scouts and reporters. One time a Colorado Rockies scout came to watch Nease’s star shortstop, Fagan recalled, but got the “Tebow Experience” instead.

Even Sandy Alderson laughed at the idea of Tim Tebow playing baseball when it was first reported early last month.

Alderson acknowledged that when Tebow held his workout, not “all the boxes checked off” with high ratings. It’s a bit of a drive from Citi Field, but at least it’s in the same state.

Tebow shares an agent – Brodie Van Wagenen – with Yoenis Cespedes, who has an opt-out clause he can exercise after the season.

Alderson replied that that was not the case, although that will not quiet speculation that it is. “I’m very grateful to have the opportunity”, Tebow said.

“I would consider success giving everything I have, putting in the work”, he said. “But I’m looking forward to putting in the work and I felt like this was the best fit”.

He will report September 18 to the Instructional League in Port St. Lucie, Florida, and test his baseball skills for three weeks against players just months removed from high school and college. What can it hurt to have him at spring training and in your minor league system and maybe you catch lightning in a bottle. He will participate in the #Mets Instructional League’.

Tim Tebow’s instructional league debut will mark the first time he has played organized baseball in over a decade. I want to be someone that pursues what I believe in and what I’m passionate about, and a lot of people will say, “Well, what if you fail?” On a baseball field?

Tebow played 12 games with the Jets in 2012, so he should know his way around the subway.

“Someone is going to sign him, I guarantee you that, because it’s Tim Tebow and [the fans] will be coming to a baseball game with a football jersey on, selling tickets”, Decker said. But all of those players played baseball in college and started their professional careers at a much younger age than Tebow. How long? I reached out to ESPN’s scouting expert Keith Law to ask where he’d place Tebow in the Mets’ prospect rankings.

Having flopped with the New York Jets, Tim Tebow will try to revive his career as an outfielder with the Mets.

Tebow initially worked for ESPN and the SEC Network as an analyst in 2014, and then he resumed his duties not long after he was released by the Philadelphia Eagles in September of a year ago.
