Mr Broughton came fourth in the leadership contest, 16 months after finishing second to Iain Wright in his bid to become Hartlepool’s MP.

The MEP for South East England won with 8,451 votes.

‘We did it ladies and gentlemen, ‘ she said in her victory speech at the party’s conference in Bournemouth.

Discussing his future, after promising this time he will not U-turn on his decision to stand down as leader, Farage said he will still be involved in the party.

Deborah Pitt, a doctor from Cardiff and a UKIP member since 2006, said she was concerned about what an European Union working time directive would mean for doctors’ training and care.

Splits between various factions, and over the Brexit referendum, had “created a cancer in the heart of the party and led to its leading lights using Ukip as a football”, Nuttall said.

Meanwhile, the party’s only MP will take to the conference stage as the bitter divisions in the party showed no sign of healing under new leader Diane James.

James, who was the most widely-known of the candidates, adopted the unusual approach of refusing to take part in hustings in the run-up to the contest. “We should be the party people vote for if they want change”. James will also have to contend with infighting. And she has also said she will “professionalise” the party.

And she said the party needs to change and become more professionalised to become “a winning political machine”.

She told The Guardian that “ideologically the Tories are doing the UKIP dance now”. “I think it’s extraordinary that the speaker of the Ukip group in the Assembly should be replaced as the speaker by someone who’s just resigned in the assembly”.

She added: “The European Union referendum and the outcome meant that Britain, or the United Kingdom, however you want to style it, is embarking on a new era and that is the same for our party – the United Kingdom Independence Party”.

Most recently, US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has warned that Russia is supporting her Republican rival, Donald Trump, by leaking hacked information that experts said they had linked to Russian state-sponsored actors.

Upon accepting the leadership, James reminded UKIP members of their successes – and slammed Prime Minister Theresa May.

He will tell delegates that Mr Farage remains the real focus of power in Ukip.

Volunteers on the party’s ruling National Executive Committee had decided that Mr Hamilton was “great fun, therefore would be a great candidate”, Mr Farage said, adding that he had no power to stop it.

She told BuzzFeed News: “I think she’ll bring a certain experience, I think she’s very articulate, I think she has a good presence and I think that she’s well informed, I think she gave a good speech her acceptance speech and I think she’s done quite well in her campaign”.
