Former Panther Steve Smith says he’ll retire after 2015 season

Smith announced Monday that he will retire from the NFL following the upcoming 2015 season. “I feel like this is the best place, if this is going to be the end, this will be the best place to end”, Smith said. Coach John Harbaugh, however, has talked with Smith about reducing his role this season to keep him fresher as his numbers declined during the second half of 2014.

Smith is entering his 15th season since entering the league as a third-round pick of the Panthers in 2001.

The Carolina Panthers released Smith from the team in March 2014. In a revenge game against his former Carolina teammates, Smith struck for 139 yards and two touchdowns on seven catches.

Smith’s Ravens are 14/1 to win Super Bowl 50 at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook.

“Me and my family basically after this season, this is my last season”, Smith said. “We have a great team”. “I’m going to go home, and be Dad”. “All the chips are on the table”. He’s been named to five Pro Bowls and was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2005, when he had 1,563 yards and 12 touchdowns a season after playing in just one game.

Returning for one final season is just another statement from a man that has made his living making them loud and boisterous.
