This story is developing. He says a more complete public statement will be issued next week when more details are known.

Carter says he will rearrange his schedule to be treated at Emory Healthcare.

He was ousted from office by Ronald Reagan after just one White House term.

Carter cut short a trip to Guyana in May after feeling unwell and returned to Atlanta.

Jimmy Carter will make a statement next week on how serious his cancer is.

His brother Billy, and sisters Ruth and Gloria all died of pancreatic cancer, along with his parents James Earl Carter Sr. and Lillian Gordy Carter.

Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, says “Our thoughts and prayers go out to President Carter”.

“Given the president’s age, any treatments, their potential and their impacts, will undoubtedly be discussed carefully with him and his family”, he added.
