Former Secret Service official: Trump comments “pretty close to the edge”

In the speech, Trump alleged that Clinton intends to “abolish” the Second Amendment to the USA constitution, which guarantees the right to bear arms.

“If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks”, he said.

On the defensive once again, Donald Trump is blaming faulty interpretations and media bias for an uproar over his comments about the Second Amendment. I don’t know. But I tell you what: That would be a awful day if – if Hillary gets to put her judges [in]’.

Mr Trump dismissed the claims, tweeting that he was trying to unify gun rights supporters to turn out to vote to defeat Mrs Clinton.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign is stepping up its effort to bring on board Republicans and independent voters disenchanted with her Republican rival Donald Trump.

The ex-official said that, if still employed in the Secret Service, they would try to get in contact with a staff member of Trump’s campaign to discuss the “consequences of his rhetoric” and make sure someone understands its potential, possibly grim influence.

A US Secret Service official confirms to CNN that the USSS has spoken to the Trump campaign regarding his Second Amendment comments. A spokesperson for the service told BuzzFeed News repeatedly that they were “aware of [Trump’s] comments” before hanging up the phone.

Another of Trump’s assertions is that even if Clinton, as president, stacked the Supreme Court with justices sympathetic to gun control – as Trump has warned – that alone would not be enough to abolish the Second Amendment.

And while a sympathetic Supreme Court would allow the court to rule in favor of certain gun control measures and chip away at the Second Amendment in aggregate, as Trump has suggested.

The turmoil among Republicans was reflected in a Reuters/IPSOS poll on Wednesday that showed almost one-in-five registered Republicans voters wanted Trump to drop out ahead of the November 8 election. “He had no idea that anybody would interpret his words that way”.

Democrats immediately pounced on the comments, accusing him of calling for violence against their party’s nominee.

But Clinton supporters continued to slam Trump on Wednesday, saying that violence is never a joking matter. There’s really no reason to think he can elevate himself past that kind of thinking now.

“It is, in fact, unsafe for the country”, she said.

Bernice King, the daughter of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., took to Twitter to voice her concerns.

“I am not an enemy of Hillary Clinton, I consider her a friend”.

And former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather posted on Facebook that Trump “crossed a line with risky potential”.

Clinton held a campaign event in Miami, Florida, where four cases of the Zika virus have been reported.

The Clinton campaign on Wednesday unveiled a website, togetherforamerica.com, for Republicans and independents to sign up in support of Clinton.
