Former Syracuse football DE Dwight Freeney to sign with Arizona Cardinals

Freeney is one of the most prolific pass rushers of all time, but managed just four sacks in two seasons with the Chargers.

Last year, Freeney had 3.5 sacks as a member of the San Diego Chargers and he finished the season seventh in the National Football League with 21 hurries.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.V. – Luck has been on the Arizona Cardinals’ side over the past few years when it comes to signing veteran free agents.

He’ll have more incentive than just proving he’s still capable of getting to the quarter in his mid-30s.

The Syracuse product also played under Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians while with the Colts.

While the tandem of Calais Campbell and Cory Redding now man the left defensive end position for Arizona and team sack-leader Alex Okafor (two sacks) commands the left outside linebacker position, expect Freeney to receive time at the opposite outside linebacker slot, or potentially with his hand in the ground at the right defensive end spot.

“It’s outstanding”, Arians said in his regular Monday meeting with reporters.

Plus, he’s joining a team that’s pretty good so far.

Dwight Freeeny should still be able to contribute in a situational pass rusher role, which is likely exactly what role he will fill with the Cardinals. Arians told Arizona Sports 98.7 the original consideration of bringing in Freeney went away as the Cardinals liked the play of their young outside linebackers. A backup, Demens is a core special teams player who will be hard to replace.

-RUSHING OFFENSE: A. Chris Johnson has helped the team achieved what might be its best running attack since moving to the desert in 1988.

One of them was Andre Ellington’s 63-yard touchdown run.
