The Boston Red Sox have hired Dave Dombrowski as their new president of baseball operations.

The team said Dave Dombrowski has been named President of Baseball Operations. While the idea of a Cherington – Dombrowski partnership is appealing-Cherington bringing a creative approach to hard problems, and Dombrowski providing a necessary check on said creativity-that’s not usually how these arrangements work out, with general managers generally working in a more administrative role.
Dombrowski was the GM of the Tigers until he and the team parted ways earlier this month.
The Red Sox have made a major change. Henry lauded Dombrowski’s arrival in a press release. While Dombrowski is not known to be the most statistically-oriented baseball executive in the world, he’s coming into an environment which is heavily entrenched in analytics, which could make for an interesting transition.

Dombrowski was considered to be a candidate to take over Paul Beeston’s post as Blue Jays president, which will become vacant following the 2015 season. “I expressed to John and Tom that Boston would be my absolute top choice and am honored to have the chance to serve Red Sox Nation”. He was the general manager of the Marlins when Red Sox principal owner John Henry owned that team before buying the Sox. “Over 17 years with the Red Sox and in the four years as our general manager, he always put the best interests of our organization first and foremost, winning a World Series championship in 2013”.
