A former Fairfax County police officer accused of shooting and killing an unarmed man in Springfield will make his first appearance in court after being charged with murder.

Officer Adam Torres fatally shot John Geer following reports of a domestic dispute.
Police on the scene said Geer had his hands raised before he was shot, but Torres said his hands were down, according to WJLA.
A special grand jury indicted Torres Monday, and Torres turned himself in Monday evening.
WTOP’s Max Smith, who was in the courtroom, for the hearing says the medical emergency involving Torres occurred after his bail was denied.
Michael Lieberman, an attorney for Geer’s family, said he considered the charge appropriate for what he called an intentional shooting.
In April, Fairfax County settled a wrongful death suit by Geer’s family for $2.95 million, but Torres remained employed by the county’s police department until July 31.
