Police did not identify the gunman and have not said why he attacked Grimmie, according to the AP.
Authorities said officers arrived to find the male suspect dead and Grimmie gravely injured.
Tributes poured in for the young singer from New Jersey, who finished third in the sixth series of the U.S. version of the hit reality show in 2014.
Levine posted a photo of himself with Grimmie on Instagram: “I’m sad, shocked and confused”.
“It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord”. The 22-year-old singer died in a local hospital. Police said up to 100 young people attended the concert, many describing a scene of chaos with people running and screaming.
They said: “Christina was such a loving, caring, handsome person with the biggest heart”.
“We are heartbroken”, the show said in a tweet that called Grimmie “a loved member of our family”.
A native of New Jersey, Grimmie first gained fame as a YouTube star, posting covers of songs by Adele and Miley Cyrus. Here she performs “With Love” on the show in 2014.
