Formula One: New engine and gearbox for back-row Vettel

Ferrari has opted to fit a new power unit and gearbox to Sebastian Vettel’s Formula 1 auto ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

The four-time world champion and Singapore victor 12 months ago qualified in last place on Saturday night after a right-rear suspension link failed, lifting his front left wheel off the street circuit tarmac. The installation of the new power unit incurs a 20-place grid drop, but is meaningless under the circumstances with Vettel at the back of the grid anyway.

Already at the back of the field, Ferrari chose to change both his engine and gearbox.

Ferrari has given Vettel a new internal combustion engine (ICE), turbocharger and MGU-H.

“We sure had a good strategy today, also we had the chance to make a big progress with a safety auto, but it didn’t come, so P5 is a very good result”. And then it could be the safety vehicle puts us back to where we belong. For starters, the drivers want faster, more exciting cars, with Ferrari’s driver invoking the old school era of screaming V12 engines, instead of today’s neutered V6 hybrids.

“Already in the first lap, going into turn one, something happened”.

“I know patience is not a quality of the Ferraristi, it’s not a quality of mine either, we are here to win and we’re not satisfied until it happens, but we’re progressing step by step and one day I think it will pay off”.

“At some point I thought we maybe could get close to the battle for third with Kimi and Lewis but in the end the gap was a bit too big – I think we lost a bit too much probably in the opening stages of the race which also was to be expected”.
