Forza Motorsport 6: Apex Announced, Free-to-Play on PC

That changes now- Microsoft have announced Forza Motorsport 6 Apex, a free to play version of last Fall’s hit Xbox One entry in the long running franchise, which will hit Windows 10 PCs this Spring.

According to creative director Dan Greenawalt, Apex is intended as a technological showcase rather than a commercial venture.

Similar to Quantum Break, Windows 10 version of Forza 6 may not be available on Steam. “This wasn’t developed with a business objective”, he said. Now that the wraps are off, we can tell you about them.

Microsoft wants to bring its Xbox One games, at least, the ones that it controls, exclusively to the Windows 10 Store. It features fantastic 4K resolution and unlimited refresh rates.

The one Microsoft franchise that had always been exclusive to just Xbox devices and nothing else had been Forza- since the franchise’s inception in 2005, Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon games have appeared only on Xbox consoles, and nowhere else. In it we praise the game’s “gargantuan depth”, saying “any petrolhead should buy Forza 6 without a second thought”.

For more on the future of Forza, stay tuned to IGN. “We are 100 percent committed to the PC-gaming space”, said Spencer. Later this year Halo Wars 2 will be released on PC, and it has been rumoured that Gears of War 4 will follow suit. If Microsoft is to garner support for its UWP strategy, it’ll need first-party titles like this to reveal the capacity of the platform.

Turn 10 is planning to offer 63 cars, and more than 20 tracks, across 6 real-world environments. It is not inconceivable that extra maps, cars, circuits or modes could arrive in monetised packs. Transport and accommodation costs were met by Microsoft.
