The tornados – residents say at least four of them – ripped off power cables and knocked over pylons, leaving some 50,000 people in the dark, the Dallas Morning News reported.
An official with the Dallas County Sheriff’s office says deputies are responding to damages caused by a tornado east of Dallas, including a trailer park ablaze.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokesman Greg Flynn said 56 injuries were reported and 241 homes were destroyed or severely damaged.
Tornadoes apparently hit parts of Collin, Dallas and Ellis Counties as unsafe weather moved through North Texas the day after Christmas.
“A variety of unsafe weather conditions will continue across the middle of the country through Sunday”, the National Weather Service said.
The blizzard could blanket parts of Oklahoma and Texas with 9 to 18 inches of snow as gusty, freezing winds whip through the region.
The tornado-hit areas of Alabama and MS will get another round of rain on Monday night, Duffey said. CNN affiliate WFSA said dozens of roads in the county have been shut down. Late Saturday, one death was reported in Alabama. An hour later the National Weather service confirmed that first responders were on the scene along Jefferson Avenue, a working class neighborhood less than 10 miles from downtown Birmingham.
Motorists were warned they could face icy roads.
Rowlett, a suburb northeast of Dallas, was among the hardest-hit areas.
Barbara Perkins was told Thursday by an insurance agent that her storm-damaged home in Falkner, Mississippi, was a complete loss.
Two deaths attributable to weather were reported Saturday in MS: two people who have been missing since Wednesday, bringing that state’s toll to 10. Three homes collapsed, but only one person was injured. It could rise to 41 feet Saturday evening, Coffee County Emergency Management Director Larry Walker said.
Peak tornado season in the South is in the spring, but such storms can happen at any time.
“Winter Storm Goliath will bring snow and ice to much of the country, from the Plains to the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and interior Northeast”, said weather.com meteorologist Quincy Vagell.
Several flash flood warnings were issued in the southern and eastern portions of the state late Saturday as heavy rain drenched a ribbon of counties from the Red River to the Arkansas border.
