Four home runs not enough for Cardinals

The book is not yet closed on the Mets’ 2016 season as the team rebounded from a rough series against Arizona to go 4-3 against the Giants and Cardinals to end this stanza.

With the Mets holding a six run lead, Mets’ manager Terry Collins tried to use Josh Smoker to get through the eighth. We’re not getting worn out on the field. The Mets entered the season hopeful Wheeler would return by July and perhaps bump Bartolo Colon to the bullpen.

Why not? While this season hardly has been a joyride for the defending NL champs, they do keep us entertained, and nearly impossible to predict.

Tuesday’s loss, Matheny explained, was the result of Jaime Garcia’s wobbly start, not an overall poor performance from the team. “That last pitch I threw in warmups, the third or fourth pitch, it felt different”.

Brandon Moss hit two home runs for the Cardinals and Jedd Gyorko and Stephen Piscotty also connected. He has a 2.31 ERA (three earned runs in 11 2/3 innings) in his first two starts.

Lugo left with a 7-0 lead and was in line for his first career win. He walked three, struck out five and induced inning-ending double plays in the sixth and seventh.

TORONTO – Albert Pujols reached the 100-RBI mark for the 13th time, the fifth player in history to achieve the feat, Mike Trout had three hits and drove in four runs, and Los Angeles beat Toronto. Pinch-runner Alejandro De Aza scored on a double by Asdrubal Cabrera.

Martinez (12-7) gave up four hits and got his second straight victory. Thank God we got that one today. “I don’t know what else I could have done there”.

The homer was just one of the highlights in De Aza’s huge night. “His calf knotted up when he was actually jogging out to right field in the first inning”.

“That’s where the issue lies”, Collins said. “He doesn’t have to like it, but he accepts it and gets himself ready. All he needed was a chance to get to play with it and when he got it he’s made the most out of it”, he said.

Adam Wainwright has steadfastly tried to keep his chin up during this challenging season, but that’s becoming more and more hard for the longtime St. Louis Cardinals pitcher.

Jered Weaver pitched 5 2/3 innings to snap a three-start losing streak and help the Angels win consecutive games for the first time since August 2-3. After an 8-1 loss to the Cardinals on Wednesday night, NY optioned RHP Erik Goeddel to Triple-A Las Vegas and recalled LHP Sean Gilmartin.

It was a crucial swing game for the Mets, who avoided falling further behind in the playoff chase and instead pulled within 3 1/2 games of the Cardinals for the second Wild Card spot.
