They were around the premises of Italian oil giant ENI in the region of Mellitah, to the west of Tripoli, when they were snatched, the ministry said.
“At the moment, we are in contact and strictly co-ordinating with the authorities and crisis unit of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs”.
“As you know, following the closure of the Embassy of Italy in Libya on February 15, the foreign ministry had reported the extremely hard situation in the country and called on all compatriots to leave Libya”, the ministerial statement said.
The country is beset with warring factions four years after the civil war that ousted leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said it was hard to speculate who was behind the abductions. The workers were abducted Sunday evening, and their families were told about it overnight.
