Four killed as Train derails in Spain

In July, two passenger trains collided head-on in a rural area of southeastern Italy, killing at least 23 people and injuring more than 50 others.

In 2013, 80 people were killed in Spain’s worst rail disaster in decades when a high-speed train went off the tracks and slammed into a wall near Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia. The train – which was operated by Portuguese railway operator Comboios de Portugal – had left the Spanish city of Vigo at 9:02 a.m. and was en-route to Porto in Portugal when the accident occurred.

Spanish TV network RTVE reported that firemen are still working to rescue a person from the train and this person could have died, while the presence of others among the wreckage has not been ruled out. The back two wagons stayed upright but the first ended up significantly titled to one side. One was said to be a United States tourist who died on the train but no further details were given about their identity.

The regional government said 27 injured passengers were in emergency care.

Helicopters and ambulances rushed to attend to victims of the Friday morning accident, in which authorities said another 47 people were hurt, some of them still in hospital but none critical.

The train was approaching Porrino station when it derailed.
