Four ministers among AIADMK bigwigs to lose in TN

Addressing party workers, Jayalalithaa called the victory a historic one and vowed to strive for the people with renewed vigour.

DMK’s Karunanidhi and DMDK’s Vijaykanth has won their individual seats but could not make their respective parties to win the required seats to form a government.

The stock had gained sharply by 10 per cent on Tuesday after exit polls gave DMK-Congress alliance a comfortable majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly.

In the run up to polls, she had appealed to the people to vote against the family rule of DMK and support her party to nurture democracy. The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies which too contested all the seats suffered a similar fate.

Jayalalithaa on Thursday led her AIADMK to a second five-year term, convincingly defeating a divided opposition and proving wrong exit polls that predicted her ouster. Neither CPI nor CPI (M) candidates managed to win a single seat. Yet, the clean image of Stalin did help the DMK improve its electoral status.

The AIADMK has gained a clear majority in the decisive Tamil Nadu’s 15th Assembly Elections 2016. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Jayalalithaa and congratulated her on her victory and conveyed his best wishes to her.

Vijayakant of DMK is ahead with 2466 votes in Ulundurpet after the completion of two rounds of counting. “We will continue to work together to strengthen the People’s Welfare Front (PWF), the third front”, he said.

In Assam, where Congress lost power to BJP, the former’s vote share was 31 per cent (52,38,665 votes) while the latter got 29.5 per cent share (49,92,185 votes). In the 2015 bypoll, Jayalalithaa defeated her lone challenger Mahendran C of the CPI.
