The department did not provide the status of the expectant mother and her unborn baby, but said that anybody on active duty is covered by medical insurance. Many have traveled in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, he said, where there have been Zika outbreaks.
The first case of female-to-male Zika transmission was confirmed in NY in July, and the first person to die of the virus in continental U.S. happened in Utah the same month.
The women contracted the virus after spending time in another country.
A mosquito carrying West Nile has been found in Winnebago County, but there have been no human cases reported.
Dave Zazra, of the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, said there are no species of mosquitoes capable of transmitting the Zika virus in IL.
While Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the vectors for Zika, have been found in 12 California counties, the CDPH said there was no sign of local transmission with the two cases reported today.
Through the placenta: During the first trimester, it can travel through the placenta by infecting numerous placental cells – something very few viruses can do.
Studies are underway to find out how long Zika stays in the semen and vaginal fluids of people who have Zika, and how long it can be passed to sex partners.
Through the amniotic sac: In the second and third trimester, the virus can make its way through the amniotic sac. The disease can cause severe fetal brain defects, such as microcephaly.
When an unusually high number of babies in Brazil were born with microcephaly past year, health experts began to suspect Zika virus.
Florida authorities have yet to find the virus in mosquitoes, which obtain it from the blood of infected people and then spread it when they bite someone else.
Often people infected have no symptoms, but those who do have symptoms report fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. “We continue to closely monitor developments in our understanding of the Zika virus as treatments and testing regimes develop”.

Earlier this week, the Illinois Department of Public Health issued a travel alert for South Florida.
