Four things we learned Monday at Big Ten media days

The former University of Wisconsin and Ohio State defensive coordinator didn’t need to brainstorm how to attack his first head coaching job or ask his new Scarlet Knight coaches and players how they’d like to proceed in turning around a program still new to the Big Ten Conference.

But what if there was a magical way to get coaches to be 100% honest, no matter what the question might be? Considering that Brian Kelly shares all of the same traits that made Weis so repulsive, my hatred for the program has only grown stronger over the years. But you just want to make sure that you have open lines of communication, that you’re as transparent as you possibly can be. “I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of great coaches, players and coaching a lot of really big games in this conference”. You can be the judge.

Love him or hate him, MI coach Jim Harbaugh is most comfortable when the bright lights are turned on and he’s allowed to wax poetic.

With Claeys taking over for Kill, a big question I had was how he would differentiate and create his own style from a man he had a working relationship with for such a long time.

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin is confident in this season’s team – is that an indicator that the Aggies will be improved?

So Kirk, do you mind if I call you Kirk? “We seem to play pretty well and plan on doing that again this year”. But he also didn’t dispel any grand notions for this year’s team. “If it’s 1 percent better, each guy, or we got 1 percent better as a team each day then after 30 days, we’d be 30 percent better”.

“That’s who I am as a coach”, Durkin said. Their addition would feel rather seamless considering so many opponents would already be familiar with the Irish.

How long until you start thinking about jumping back to the NFL?

“I haven’t had a haircut in about five weeks”, Harbaugh said when asked about it. Connor Cook is gone, yes, but the Spartans are loaded at other positions.

How good can Mitch Leidner be in his final season? “Our kids are excited about it”. The two reached a 10-year $34 million contract extension in 2014 to mirror the success of Nike’s partnership with Oregon.

“There’s a small free agency period in the National Football League, and this is a year-round sport in itself with recruiting”, Smith said, per the Big Ten Network’s broadcast.

“I think (Henry’s) a bright, young coach, and he’s a ideal fit for me because he knows how I like to coach in the secondary”, Ash said.

Now does that sound like a guy you want to go to war with? It’s just that you have a different degree of athlete at every level.

Honestly.how much of a shadow does everything STILL happening with the Sandusky case and Joe Paterno cast over your program? Likely even received looks in the backfield, going for 95 rushing yards on 11 carries.

Did you send Ryker Fyfe and Mike Riley a nice “thank you” card for saving your job a year ago? He signed a fan’s bicep with a Sharpie, then told the fan to come back for another try Tuesday because he didn’t like the way his skin signature looked.

“I subscribe to the “sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me” philosophy”. You enjoy Peggy’s during the Relays, or were you more of a West End kind of guy?

Now, would Notre Dame ever consider joining the Big Ten as a full-time member? It’s not about him going into his senior year. Much of our training camp is going to be dedicated to winning the next game, and we’re playing them as they fall.
