The vehicle, carrying three men and a woman, were stopped by police as the auto didn’t have license plates, but they sped away from the cops.
No one was hurt and four people were arrested.
There was a 90 minute chase involving several police cars through the Cromwell and Kawarau Gorges to Queenstown and then around the Wakatipu Basin.
‘Not only did they place themselves in danger by continuing to flee police, but they put a large number of other motorists in danger on the roads due to the distance that they travelled’. They were also charged in a series of drive-off gas thefts that had plagued local gas stations.
The sheep were being moved by an unsuspecting farm worker when they inadvertantly became a road block.
Baker said the police on the scene behaved professionally and focused on arresting the offenders, who were “agitated”.

The fugitives even managed to continue after road spikes deployed by officers destroyed one of their vehicle’s tyres.
